Developing a Good Oral Care Routine

Your best smile depends on consistent care. At Saddle Brook Family Dentistry in Saddle Brook, NJ, your dentists--Dr. Suchora and Dr. Fraser--help their patients develop good oral care routines. Together, you'll maintain your healthy smile for life.

At-home care

Oral health care affects not only your teeth and gums but also, what happens in the rest of your body. For instance, the American Heart Association (AHA) maintains that cardiovascular health is directly linked to how healthy your gums are. Also, your psychological well-being in part depends on how attractive your smile is, reports the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD).

So, we all need to prioritize daily dental routines. These include:

  1. Brushing twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste
  2. Using strand floss, a WaterPik or interproximal brushes once a day to remove plaque
  3. Being intentional about our diets. That means limiting alcohol, sugar and carbs and increasing fiber, protein and calcium.
  4. Drinking as much water as possible
  5. Wearing protective mouth guards when playing sports
  6. Limit the things which wear down your tooth enamel--acidic foods, soda, coffee and tea. Use a bite guard if you clench or grind your teeth unconsciously.

In-office care

The American Dental Association (ADA) advises you to keep routine appointments with your family dentist in his Saddle Brook, NJ, office. This six-month visit provides comprehensive preventive services that ward off and detect a variety of oral health issues. They include:

  • A hygienic cleaning to remove plaque and tartar
  • Digital X-rays--both panoramic and bite-wing
  • Gum pocket measurement and charting
  • An examination for decay, condition of fillings and other restorations, jaw joint function, and dental bite
  • A comfortable oral cancer screening
  • Formulation of a complete care plan to include preventive, restorative and cosmetic needs going forward
